Looks Like the “99 Cent Store Diet” is a Winner

June 18th, 2013

I really enjoyed this story… Last week, ABC News covered the weight loss saga of “Papa Joe” Aviance, a Southern California recording artist and producer, who lost a whopping 250 pounds over an 18 month period. And he did it on a budget

The Detox Delusion

June 14th, 2013

We still receive questions and comments about detoxes and detoxifying a near-daily basis, and many of the products we review contain some sort of “detoxifying” element. And although we have covered this topic in significant detail (see here, here and here!), the silliness – detoxes are complete nonsense – continues unabated.

“Uhhhh… It’s Water.”

June 13th, 2013

The title of this post was Number One Son’s response after I described Nestlé’s newest bottled water product, “Resource,” to him, while we were between leg press sets at the gym. According to Nestlé, however, it’s not just any ol’ bottled water! It’s… “…a premium water made specifically for ‘a woman who is a little

College Student Nearly Dies After Soy Sauce OD

June 11th, 2013

When I first saw this story on LiveScience (via Consumerist), I did a double-take… It’s tough to believe that someone – even a college student – could be so foolhardy. “A young man who drank a quart of soy sauce went into a coma and nearly died from an excess of salt in his body,

Study: 5-Hour Energy No Better Than Caffeine

June 8th, 2013

LiveScience has the “buzz” on a recent study that compared 5-Hour Energy shots to plain ol’ caffeine with respect to brain activity during an attention-requiring task. No difference between the two was found.

If Only the Pizza Was This Cool…

June 6th, 2013

Here’s irony for you: so much technological awesomeness in support of something so ordinary. Allegedly, the “Domino’s DomiCopter” was able to deliver two large pizzas across the city of Guildford (outside of London) in only 10 minutes. I’m impressed by the technology, although I suspect that – in practice – “DomiCopters” will be more trouble

Does Ginkgo biloba Extract Cause Cancer?

June 5th, 2013

Rhetorical fists are flying over a recent technical report released by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) on the toxicology and carcinogenesis of oral Ginkgo biloba extract in rats and mice. In one corner is the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which is advising consumers to avoid Ginkgo-containing supplements and energy drinks

Dr. Miller’s Lack of Willpower

June 4th, 2013

The internet is abuzz today, over this tweet from Dr. Geoffrey Miller, a psychology professor at the University of New Mexico (currently a visiting instructor at NYU). Dear obese PhD applicants: If you don’t have the willpower to stop eating carbs, you won’t have the willpower to do a dissertation.

Kellogg Finally Settles FTC Lawsuit for $4 Million

June 3rd, 2013

The wheels of justice turn slowly… often painfully so. Back in 2009, Kellogg was sued by the FTC for deceptive advertising, over claims that its “Frosted Mini-Wheats” cereal would make kids more attentive in school. For example, according to a Kellogg press release (cited in the FTC complaint): Keeping ‘Em Full and Focused Kellogg recently

May 14th, 2013

Yep, they’ve finally come to their senses: the World Anti-Doping Agency has realized that they were wrong about Deer Antler Velvet, and removed it from their list of banned supplements. For those people trying to sell deer antler velvet supplements (sprays, powders, etc), as a natural alternative to HGH (human growth hormone) therapy, it is
