Denmark Levies “Fat Tax”

According to the Telegraph, it’s the world’s first tax on foods high in saturated fat. Starting from this Saturday, Danes will pay an extra 30p on each pack of butter, 8p on a pack of crisps, and an extra 13p on a pound of mince, as a result of the tax.

Hungary Institutes “Fat Tax”

According to Spiegel Online, Hungary has placed additional taxes on high fat, sugar and salty foods to offset state health care costs. “Hungarians are really into desserts,” said Carolyn Banfalvi, co-founder of Taste Hungary. The tour company operator describes Hungarian food in general as “very fatty,” with traditional cooking ingredients that include pork and goose fat.
